Just like humans, animals make their homes in a safe and cozy place. They deserve a cozy place to feel happy and healthy. But other farms employ battery hen farms, which are cruel to egg-laying hens. Hens are prone to numerous physical problems in these cages and they are not a good thing in our food system either.
They are small cages containing many hens living together. This gives each hen very limited room or space to move around. Often, the quarters are so cramped, in fact, that they are unable even to stretch their wings. These cages were typically filthy and encrusted with the feces of the hens. As a result, for example, the hens are jumpy and unable to do things which are natural for them, such as perching, making nests and spreading their wings wide. They are confined to a small space, causing them to feel extremely miserable and uncomfortable.
They are generally used on factory farms. That would be large farms that strive to maximize profits while minimizing expenses. That is why they are forgetful in taking care of the animals. They also forget hens are living beings who deserve care and compassion, and treat them like commodities who exist only to make a profit. The hens do not receive care and attention as the hens need and it's very unfair.
Battery cages allow farmers to regulate how many eggs a hen lays and, therefore, how much profit they make by confining hens to small spaces. That way, farmers can easily collect the eggs, because the hens literally can’t move. But this method of farming is not just cruel; it is also detrimental to the hens’ health. Hens can really feel stressed and sick when living conditions are so small, it is bad for them. Stress in animals can also impact the quality of their egg-laying.
Health risks for hens living in battery hen farms With no space to move, they frequently injure themselves, lose feathers and become sick. You can also get an infection because their living conditions are not clean. Hens deserve to live in a better environment, one that this process makes them suffer a lot. They need to have room to roam, to stretch their wings and have space to get comfortable.”
Battery cages aren’t just bad news for the hens; they could be unsafe for our food, too. Hens in cages can become ill easily and spread diseases to other animals and, in some cases, humans. It is due to this that our food becomes unhealthy and we face health problems. If the hens are not healthy, then this can also lead to poor egg production. Plus, keeping animals in battery cages in subservient conditions is unethical and bad for the agri-food business. We all need to know that the food we eat comes from farms that treat animals with dignity and compassion.
