Broiler chickens are bred to be eaten, as opposed to laying hens. These chickens are really significant in many people's diets. But they should not be raised in battery cages, which is not beneficial to them. This method is known as the battery cage system, which does not care for the needs of the chickens. This is inhumane and unhealthy for animals raised this way at all.
Battery cages are cramped cages for broilers that are stacked on top of each other. These tiny cages are so small that the chickens don’t even have enough room to move freely, let alone spread their wings like they ought to. This makes it difficult for them to feel comfortable. The excrement piles up, and the chickens are confined in cramped cages, often living in their own waste, which makes them sick and gives rise to a host of health issues. They are kept in artificial lights round the clock, hence they do not receive any natural sunlight. They are not happy and healthy in a dark space with no fresh air.
Battery egg farming is all about money not animal welfare. It aims to create as many chickens as possible, while spending as few dollars as it can on their care. This treatment means the chickens are regarded as a commodity rather than a living animal with feelings and needs. Sadly, this method does not take into account that these chickens should be treated with compassion and consideration!
Battery cages are one of the so-called 'conventional' methods of keeping broilers; unfortunately, they give rise to a host of serious problems for the health and happiness of these agricultural birds. This can damage their bones and muscles because they do not have enough room to roam or enough light to see. With insufficient space, they can also become sick more frequently as well as have other health problems. Not having enough space can cause behavior issues, such as feather pecking, where one chick pecks at another’s feathers. That creates stress and unhappiness among the chickens, which is a sad thing to see. Stressful birds cannot thrive, and that is not right for them.
At Hemei we have a right to love and treat chickens kindly. In other words, they’re supposed to have room to roam freely, adequate sunshine and fresh air to breathe. We think farmers on this issue need to understand that chickens are living, breathing beings and need to be treated right. Farming methods should be good for the environment so we can help take care of our planet.
